Early Life and Education
Kristin Laura Kreuk was born on December 30, 1982, in Vancouver, British Columbia. Her parents, Peter Kreuk and Deanna Che, are both landscape architects. Her father is of Dutch descent, while her mother is of Chinese descent and was born in Indonesia. Kreuk’s maternal grandmother was Chinese Jamaican. She has a younger sister named Justine.
During her school years, Kreuk trained in both karate, earning a purple belt, and gymnastics at a national level. However, she had to cease her training in grade 11 due to scoliosis. Before her acting career began, she intended to study psychology, environmental science, or forensic science at Simon Fraser University.
Career Beginnings
Kreuk’s acting career started when a casting director for the CBC teen drama Edgemont contacted her secondary school, Eric Hamber Secondary School in Vancouver. The production was looking for an actress with an “exotic” look to play the Chinese-Canadian character Laurel Yeung. Despite having no prior professional acting experience beyond high school musicals, her drama teacher encouraged her to audition, and she was cast in the role.
Following her work on the first season of Edgemont, Kreuk secured an agent and landed her next role as the titular character in the 2001 television movie Snow White: The Fairest of Them All, which aired on ABC.
Breakthrough with Smallville
In 2001, Kristin Laura Kreuk was the first actor cast in the American superhero television series Smallville. She portrayed Lana Lang, the primary love interest of a young Clark Kent. This role brought her significant recognition and became a defining part of her early career. She starred in the series for eight seasons, leaving in early 2008, but later returned as a guest star in the eighth season for five episodes to conclude her character’s storyline.
Subsequent Film and Television Roles
During and after her time on Smallville, Kreuk took on roles in various films and television series. In 2004, she appeared in the Sci-Fi Channel miniseries Legend of Earthsea. Her film credits include a role in the 2004 comedy EuroTrip and the lead role in the 2009 martial arts film Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. She also appeared in the 2011 film Irvine Welsh’s Ecstasy.
Kreuk had a recurring role in the third season of the NBC series Chuck, where she played Hannah. In 2010, she portrayed Tirzah, the sister of the titular character, in the television movie Ben-Hur. From 2012 to 2016, she starred as Catherine Chandler in The CW’s sci-fi series Beauty & the Beast.
More recently, from 2018 to 2021, she played the lead role of lawyer Joanna Hanley in the CBC legal drama Burden of Truth, which also aired on The CW in the United States. In 2022, she reunited with her Smallville co-star Alan Ritchson in several episodes of the series Reacher.
