Early Life and Education
Kelly Paul Oubre Jr. was born on December 9, 1995, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Tonya Coleman and Kelly Oubre Sr. He spent his early childhood in the Magnolia public housing project before the family relocated to the Eastover section of New Orleans. In 2005, in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, his family moved to Richmond, Texas.
Oubre attended George Bush High School in Fort Bend, Texas. For his senior year, he transferred to Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nevada. Following a successful high school career, he committed to playing college basketball for the University of Kansas.
College Career
During the 2014–15 season at the University of Kansas, Oubre played in 36 games, starting 27 of them. He averaged 9.3 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game. His performance earned him recognition as the Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on two occasions, and he was named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. He also received an All-Big 12 Honorable Mention. On April 1, 2015, Oubre declared for the NBA draft, choosing to forgo his final three years of college eligibility.
Professional Career
Washington Wizards (2015–2018)
Kelly Paul Oubre Jr. was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. His draft rights were subsequently traded to the Washington Wizards. Over 252 games with the Wizards, he averaged 8.2 points and 3.5 rebounds. On November 28, 2016, he recorded his first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. He later set a career high with 19 points on December 10 of that year. During the 2017-18 season, he scored a new career-high 26 points in a game against the Detroit Pistons on January 19, 2018.
Phoenix Suns (2018–2020)
On December 17, 2018, Oubre was traded to the Phoenix Suns. In his debut with the Suns, he scored 13 points. During his time in Phoenix, he matched his career-high of 26 points on two separate occasions in January 2019. He also recorded a then career-high 12 rebounds on February 8, 2019. A left thumb injury ended his 2018-19 season prematurely. On July 16, 2019, he signed a two-year, $30 million contract extension with the team. Throughout his 96 games with the Suns, he averaged 17.9 points and 5.8 rebounds.
Golden State Warriors (2020–2021)
In November 2020, Oubre was traded first to the Oklahoma City Thunder and then to the Golden State Warriors. He made his debut for the Warriors on December 22, 2020. A highlight of his time with the Warriors came on February 4, 2021, when he scored a career-high 40 points in a victory over the Dallas Mavericks. In 55 games with the Warriors, he averaged 15.4 points and 6.0 rebounds per game.
Charlotte Hornets (2021–2023)
Oubre signed a two-year contract with the Charlotte Hornets on August 7, 2021. He debuted for the team on October 20, 2021. On January 26, 2022, he set a new season-high with 39 points, which included a career-high 10 three-pointers. A torn ligament in his left hand required surgery in January 2023, causing him to miss a portion of the season. In his 124 games with the Hornets, he averaged 17.0 points and 4.4 rebounds.
Philadelphia 76ers (2023–present)
Oubre signed with the Philadelphia 76ers in September 2023. In November 2023, he was involved in a car accident that resulted in a fractured rib and other injuries, causing him to miss 11 games. On July 15, 2024, he re-signed with the 76ers on a two-year extension.
Personal Life
Kelly Paul Oubre Jr. is the son of Kelly Oubre Sr. and Tonya Coleman. His father was his primary caregiver following his parents’ divorce. In 2022, he married Shylynn Oubre. The couple have two children, a daughter named Málibu and a son named TsuSún Kelly.
