Early Life and Family
Benjamin David Simmons was born on July 20, 1996, in Fitzroy, a suburb of Melbourne, Australia. His father, Dave Simmons, is an American-born former professional basketball player who became a naturalized Australian citizen, and his mother, Julie, is a white Australian. His father played professional basketball for the Melbourne Tigers in Australia’s National Basketball League. Simmons was raised with five siblings: Melissa, Emily, Liam, Sean, and Olivia; the first four are from his mother’s previous marriage.
The family relocated to Newcastle, New South Wales, when Simmons was 18 months old, where his father played and coached. At the age of seven, Simmons began playing basketball for the Newcastle Hunters’ under-12 team. His family returned to Melbourne when he was 10, and he continued playing junior basketball for the Knox Raiders. In addition to basketball, Simmons also played Australian rules football and rugby league during his youth. He attended Box Hill Senior Secondary College before receiving a scholarship to the Australian Institute of Sport in 2012.
Basketball Beginnings
In January 2013, Simmons moved to the United States to attend Montverde Academy in Florida, a school known for its successful basketball program. During his high school career, he received numerous accolades, including being named a McDonald’s All-American, the Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and the Gatorade National Player of the Year.
For his college career, Simmons committed to Louisiana State University (LSU). In his single season with the LSU Tigers (2015-2016), he averaged 19.2 points, 11.8 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. Despite his individual success, which included being named a consensus first-team All-American and the USBWA National Freshman of the Year, the LSU team did not qualify for the NCAA tournament. Following the season, Simmons declared for the 2016 NBA draft.
