Early Life and Background

Jalen Montez Duren was born on November 18, 2003, in Sharon Hill, Pennsylvania. His family later moved to New Castle, Delaware, where he spent a significant part of his childhood. Growing up, he participated in multiple sports, including football and baseball, before ultimately deciding to focus on basketball. Duren attended Gunning Bedford Middle School in New Castle, where his height and skills on the basketball court began to draw attention. By the seventh grade, he was already 6 feet 5 inches tall. His potential was recognized by the Philadelphia-based Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) program, Team Final, which he joined. By the time he was in the eighth grade, he had grown to approximately 6 feet 8 inches.

High School Career

Jalen Montez Duren attended Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia for his freshman and sophomore years. In his freshman season, he averaged 12.8 points, 9.3 rebounds, and 2.5 blocks per game, contributing to his team winning the Philadelphia Catholic League title. His performance earned him recognition as a MaxPreps Freshman All-American. As a sophomore, his stats improved to 18.1 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 3.4 blocks per game.

For his junior year, Jalen Montez Duren transferred to Montverde Academy in Florida, a school known for its prestigious basketball program. At Montverde, he competed against a high level of national talent, which furthered his development. He led Montverde to a national championship and was named the MaxPreps Florida High School Basketball Player of the Year for the 2020–21 season. During his high school career, he was a consensus five-star recruit and was ranked as one of the top players in his class.

College Career at Memphis

Jalen Montez Duren reclassified from the 2022 to the 2021 class to enroll in college a year early. On August 6, 2021, he announced his commitment to play for the University of Memphis. In his single season with the Memphis Tigers, he made a significant impact. In a notable performance against Western Kentucky, he recorded 19 points, 19 rebounds, and five blocked shots. For the season, he averaged 12.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 2.1 blocks per game. His contributions were instrumental in leading Memphis to its first NCAA tournament appearance since 2014. At the conclusion of the season, Jalen Montez Duren was named the AAC Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the First Team All-AAC. On April 18, 2022, he declared for the 2022 NBA draft, forgoing his remaining college eligibility.

Professional Career

Jalen Montez Duren was selected as the 13th overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Charlotte Hornets. He was then reportedly traded to the Detroit Pistons in a three-team deal. He made his NBA debut on October 19, 2022. In his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team.

National Team Experience

Jalen Montez Duren has also represented the United States in international competition. He was a member of the USA Basketball 16U team that competed at the FIBA Americas Championship in 2019, where he helped the team secure a gold medal.
