Recently, she shared a series of personal photos on social media highlighting her positive start to the year, including time spent with her children and boyfriend Danny Ramirez.
Early Life and Family
Jessica Marie Alba was born on April 28, 1981, in Pomona, California, to Catherine Louisa Jensen and Mark David Alba. Her mother has Danish, Welsh, German, English, and French ancestry, while her paternal grandparents were the children of Mexican immigrants. Her father’s career in the Air Force led the family to live in Biloxi, Mississippi, and Del Rio, Texas, before they settled in Claremont, California, when she was nine years old. She has a younger brother named Joshua.
Alba’s childhood was marked by numerous physical ailments, including pneumonia four to five times a year, partially collapsed lungs, a ruptured appendix, and a tonsillar cyst. She has also had asthma since she was a child. These health issues often led to her being hospitalized, which isolated her from other children at school. Alba graduated from Claremont High School at the age of 16 and later attended the Atlantic Theater Company.
Career Beginnings
From the age of five, Jessica Marie Alba expressed an interest in acting. In 1992, at age eleven, she won an acting competition in Beverly Hills, with the grand prize being free acting classes. An agent signed her nine months later. Her first film appearance was a small role in the 1994 feature film Camp Nowhere. Initially hired for two weeks, her role was extended to two months after a prominent actress dropped out.
As a child, Alba appeared in television commercials for Nintendo and J.C. Penney. In 1994, she had a recurring role in the Nickelodeon comedy series The Secret World of Alex Mack. She then played the role of Maya in the first two seasons of the television series Flipper, which was filmed in Australia. Being a PADI-certified scuba diver, a skill she learned at a young age, proved useful for the role. After graduating from high school, she studied acting with William H. Macy and Felicity Huffman at the Atlantic Theater Company. In 1999, she gained more visibility with roles in the films Never Been Kissed and Idle Hands.
Rise to Prominence
Her major breakthrough came when director James Cameron selected her from over a thousand candidates for the lead role of Max Guevara, a genetically engineered super-soldier, in the science-fiction television series Dark Angel. The series, which aired from 2000 to 2002, brought Alba critical acclaim, a Golden Globe nomination, a Teen Choice Award for Choice Actress, and a Saturn Award for Best Actress. This role established her as a prominent figure in Hollywood.
Following the success of Dark Angel, Alba’s film career gained momentum. Her big-screen breakthrough was in the 2003 film Honey, where she portrayed an aspiring dancer and choreographer. Although the film received mixed reviews, it was popular with teen audiences.
Major Work and Projects
Jessica Marie Alba went on to star in a variety of films that solidified her status as a leading actress. In 2005, she played the role of Nancy Callahan, a stripper, in the critically acclaimed film Sin City. That same year, she took on the role of Sue Storm, the Invisible Woman, in the Marvel Comics adaptation Fantastic Four, a role she reprised in the 2007 sequel, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer.
Throughout her career, she has frequently collaborated with director Robert Rodriguez, appearing in his films Machete (2010), Spy Kids: All the Time in the World (2011), Machete Kills (2013), and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For (2014).
