Early Life and Family
Tyrese John Haliburton was born on February 29, 2000, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to John and Brenda Haliburton. His father, John, is a basketball referee and formerly coached women’s basketball, playing a significant role in developing his son’s fundamentals and basketball IQ from a young age. Haliburton is biracial; his father is African-American and his mother is white. He has a younger brother, Marcel, and two older half-brothers from his mother’s previous marriage. His cousin, Eddie Jones, is a former NBA player.
High School and College Career
Haliburton attended Oshkosh North High School, where he played basketball and became one of Wisconsin’s top prospects. During his junior season, he was named Fox Valley Association (FVA) Player of the Year. As a senior, he averaged 22.9 points, 6.2 assists, and 5.1 rebounds per game, leading Oshkosh North to a 26–1 record and a state championship. Despite his success, he was generally rated as a three-star recruit.
In September 2017, Haliburton committed to play college basketball for Iowa State University. He quickly made an impact as a freshman during the 2018–19 season, distinguishing himself with his playmaking and low turnover rate. In a game against Southern University, he set a single-game school record with 17 assists. In his sophomore season, Haliburton’s performance elevated, and he recorded the first triple-double by an Iowa State player since 2016 in a game against TCU, with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists. His season was cut short by a fractured left wrist in February 2020. He was named to the second-team All-Big 12 for his performance. Following the season, Haliburton announced he would enter the 2020 NBA draft, forgoing his final two years of college eligibility.
Professional Career
The Sacramento Kings selected Tyrese John Haliburton with the 12th overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft. In his first season, he performed well, primarily coming off the bench, and was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team. He moved into the starting lineup during his second year.
In February 2022, the Kings traded Haliburton to the Indiana Pacers as part of a package for Domantas Sabonis. With the Pacers, Haliburton emerged as a premier point guard. He became the focal point of the team’s offense, known for his fast-paced style and expert passing. He earned his first NBA All-Star selection in 2023. The following season, he was again named an All-Star and led the league in assists, which earned him a selection to the All-NBA Third Team.
National Team Career
Haliburton has represented the United States in international competition. He was a member of the U.S. national team at the 2019 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Heraklion, Greece. He helped lead the team to a gold medal and was named to the tournament’s All-Star Five after leading all players in assists per game. He later won a gold medal with the senior national team at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
