Rayford Trae Young was born on September 19, 1998, in Lubbock, Texas. His parents are Candice and Rayford Young. His father played basketball at Texas Tech and later professionally in Europe. The family eventually moved to Norman, Oklahoma. Young has a younger brother, Tim, and two younger sisters, Caitlyn and Camryn. His upbringing was deeply rooted in basketball; his father began coaching him at a young age.

High School Career

Young attended Norman North High School in Norman, Oklahoma. During his time there, he became a standout player. As a sophomore, he averaged 25 points per game and was named Oklahoma’s Sophomore of the Year. In his senior year, he averaged 42.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. His performance earned him national recognition as a McDonald’s All-American in 2017. He was also named the Gatorade Player of the Year in Oklahoma for two consecutive seasons.

Breakthrough at Oklahoma

For his college career, Rayford Trae Young played for the Oklahoma Sooners. In his single season (2017–2018), he became the only player in NCAA history to lead the nation in both points and assists in the same season. He averaged 27.4 points and 8.7 assists per game. On December 19, 2017, he tied the NCAA Division I single-game assists record with 22. Following this standout freshman year, he received the Wayman Tisdale Award as the national freshman of the year and was a consensus first-team All-American. After the season, he declared for the 2018 NBA Draft.

NBA Career with Atlanta Hawks

In the 2018 NBA draft, Rayford Trae Young was selected with the fifth overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks but was subsequently traded to the Atlanta Hawks.
