Early Life and High School Career

Sophie Elizabeth Cunningham was born on August 16, 1996, in Columbia, Missouri, to Jim and Paula Cunningham. Coming from an athletic family, her father played football, and her mother was a track and field athlete. This athletic lineage extends to her grandparents, aunt, and uncle who all participated in collegiate sports at the University of Missouri. She has an older sister named Lindsey. Cunningham began practicing Tae Kwon Do at a young age and earned a black belt at the age of six.

Cunningham attended Rock Bridge High School in her hometown of Columbia, Missouri. During her time there, she excelled on the girls’ basketball team, leading them to four Class 5 state championships. In her senior season, she averaged 21.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists per game. Her contributions to the team were significant, and she became the all-time leading scorer for the girls’ basketball program. In recognition of her outstanding high school career, her No. 3 jersey was retired. Her accolades include being named a McDonald’s All-American in 2015, the 2014-15 Missouri Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year, and the 2015 Co-Miss Show-Me Basketball. In addition to basketball, Cunningham also played volleyball and was a kicker for the football team.

College Career at Missouri

Cunningham played college basketball for the University of Missouri Tigers from 2015 to 2019. In her freshman year, she made an immediate impact and was named the SEC Freshman of the Year and earned a spot on the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2016. Throughout her four seasons with the Tigers, she was a consistent starter, appearing in 129 games.

Her collegiate career was marked by numerous achievements. She was a three-time First-team All-SEC selection from 2017 to 2019. In her senior year, she was recognized as a Third-team All-American by both the Associated Press and the USBWA. Cunningham finished her career at Missouri as the program’s all-time leading scorer with 2,187 points and the all-time leader in free throws made with 537. She averaged 17.0 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 3.0 assists per game during her time with the Tigers.

Professional Basketball Career

Sophie Elizabeth Cunningham was selected as the 13th overall pick in the second round of the 2019 WNBA draft by the Phoenix Mercury. This made her the eighth University of Missouri alumna to be drafted into the WNBA and the highest-drafted player from the university. She played for the Phoenix Mercury from 2019 to 2024. During the WNBA off-season, Cunningham played for the Melbourne Boomers in Australia for the 2019-2020 season.

In February 2025, Cunningham was traded to the Indiana Fever.
