Early life and family

Shah Rukh Khan was born on November 2, 1965, in New Delhi, India. His father, Meer Taj Mohammed Khan, was an Indian independence activist from Peshawar. His mother, Lateef Fatima, was the adopted daughter of Major General Shah Nawaz Khan of the Indian National Army. Khan has described himself as “half Hyderabadi (mother), half Pathan (father), and some Kashmiri (grandmother)”.

Khan grew up in the Rajendra Nagar neighborhood of New Delhi in a middle-class family living in rented apartments. His father ran a restaurant and had several other business ventures. Khan attended St. Columba’s School, where he excelled in both academics and sports like hockey and football. He received the school’s highest honor, the “Sword of Honour.” A shoulder injury prevented him from pursuing a career in sports.

He graduated from Hans Raj College with a bachelor’s degree in economics in 1988 and began a master’s degree in mass communication at Jamia Millia Islamia, but left to pursue his acting career. Khan’s father passed away in 1981, and his mother died in 1991. He has an elder sister named Shehnaz Lalarukh Khan.

Career Beginnings

Shah Rukh Khan began his acting career in the late 1980s with appearances in television series. He studied acting at Delhi’s Theatre Action Group (TAG) under the mentorship of Barry John. His initial television roles were in serials like Fauji (1989) and Circus (1989), where he gained early recognition. Following the death of his mother, he moved to Mumbai in 1991.

Khan made his Bollywood debut with the film Deewana in 1992. Early in his film career, he was noted for portraying villainous roles in films such as Baazigar (1993) and Darr (1993).

Rise to Prominence

Shah Rukh Khan’s breakthrough into stardom came with a series of romantic films that established him as a leading man in Bollywood. He starred in the top-grossing romantic film Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), which became a landmark in Indian cinema. This was followed by a string of successful romantic movies, including Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), and Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham… (2001).

During this period, he also earned critical acclaim for his performance in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se.. (1998). His on-screen pairing with actress Kajol became particularly popular, with the duo delivering several hit films together.

Throughout his career, Shah Rukh Khan has appeared in more than 100 films, spanning a variety of genres. Beyond his romantic hero image, he has taken on diverse roles, earning critical acclaim for his portrayal of a hockey coach in Chak De! India (2007), a man with Asperger syndrome in My Name Is Khan (2010), and a superstar in Fan (2016). In addition to acting, Khan is a film producer and television personality. He is the co-founder of the production company Red Chillies Entertainment. He and his wife, Gauri Khan, are also co-owners of the Indian Premier League cricket team Kolkata Knight Riders.

Personal Life

Shah Rukh Khan married Gauri Chibber, a Hindu, in 1991. They have three children: a son, Aryan, a daughter, Suhana, and a younger son, AbRam, who was born through a surrogate. Khan, who is a Muslim, has stated that he values his wife’s religion and that their children are raised to follow both faiths. He remains active in the film industry.
