Early Life and Formation
Joshua James Giddey was born on October 10, 2002, in Melbourne, Australia, into a family with a strong basketball background. His parents, Warrick and Kim Giddey, were both professional basketball players. His father, Warrick, played for the Melbourne Tigers in the National Basketball League (NBL), while his mother, Kim, played for the Tigers in the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL).
Giddey attended St Kevin’s College in Melbourne before becoming recognized as a top basketball prospect at the NBA Global Academy, a training center at the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) in Canberra. He also attended UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra during his time at the AIS. In 2020, he participated in the NBA’s Basketball Without Borders program during the All-Star weekend in Chicago and was named a camp all-star.
Professional Career Beginnings
On March 12, 2020, Giddey signed with the Adelaide 36ers of the NBL as part of the league’s “Next Stars” program, designed to develop NBA draft prospects. He became the first Australian player to join the program, choosing this path over several NCAA Division I offers.
During his time with the 36ers, he set multiple records. On April 26, 2021, he became the youngest Australian in NBL history to record a triple-double. He followed this by becoming the first Australian to record triple-doubles in consecutive games. He finished the season as the league leader in assists and was named the NBL Rookie of the Year.
National Basketball Association
Oklahoma City Thunder (2021–2024)
Joshua James Giddey declared for the 2021 NBA draft and was selected as the sixth overall pick by the Oklahoma City Thunder. He signed his contract with the team on August 8, 2021. His NBA debut took place on October 20, where he recorded four points, 10 rebounds, and three assists.
During his rookie season, he achieved several milestones. On January 2, 2022, he became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double at 19 years and 84 days old. He also became the first rookie since Oscar Robertson in 1961 to record three consecutive triple-doubles. For his performance, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie Second Team for the 2021-22 season.
Chicago Bulls (2024–present)
In June 2024, Joshua James Giddey was traded to the Chicago Bulls in exchange for Alex Caruso. With the Bulls, he recorded multiple triple-doubles early in his tenure, becoming the first player in franchise history since Jimmy Butler to have more than one triple-double in a season.

In 2023, Joshua James Giddey was the subject of an investigation after anonymous social media posts alleged an improper relationship with an underage girl.
