Early Life and Education
Jay Shetty was born on September 6, 1987, in London to a Hindu family of Indian origin. He was raised in Barnet, North London. His mother is Gujarati and was raised in Yemen, while his father is of Tulu Bunt origin from Mangalore. From a young age, Shetty was a member of the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), also known as the Hare Krishna movement.
Shetty attended Queen Elizabeth’s School in Barnet. Following high school, he graduated from the Bayes Business School at City, University of London. During his time in business school, a lecture by a monk named Gauranga Das on selflessness and minimalism sparked his interest in spirituality. This encounter led him to spend several summers in India interning at corporations and training with ISKCON.
Monastic Life and Career Beginnings
After graduating from business school in 2010, Jay Shetty chose to live as a Hindu monk. Shetty has stated that he spent three years, from 2010 to 2013, living a monastic lifestyle. Accounts of his time as a monk vary, with some reports suggesting he was primarily based at Bhaktivedanta Manor in Watford, near London, while also traveling in India and the UK. His monastic life involved waking up at 4 a.m., meditation, and studying ancient texts.
In 2013, Shetty left the monastic life and returned to London. He began his corporate career at Accenture, where he worked on digital strategy and served as a social media coach for the company’s executives. During this period, friends from business school invited him to speak at their companies, where he shared insights on topics like stress management and productivity, drawing from his monastic experiences.
Rise to Prominence
Shetty’s career as a public figure began to gain traction when his work caught the attention of Arianna Huffington. In 2016, he was hired to produce videos for the Huffington Post on subjects such as relationships. After leaving the Huffington Post in early 2017, he started creating content independently for YouTube and Facebook. His motivational videos quickly gained a large following.
In 2019, he launched the podcast On Purpose, which experienced significant growth, reportedly achieving 64 million downloads in its first year and being recognized by Forbes as the number one health podcast in the world. The podcast features interviews with a wide range of public figures and experts on topics related to mental health, purpose, and wellness.
