Early Life and Education
Justine Ezarik was born on March 20, 1984, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She is the oldest daughter of Michelle Ezarik, a physical education teacher, and Steve Ezarik, a coal miner of Slovak descent. Ezarik grew up in the Scenery Hill area of Washington County with her two younger sisters, Breanne and Jenna. She attended Bentworth High School, where she was an honor student and graduated in 2002. After high school, Ezarik enrolled at the Pittsburgh Technical Institute, from which she graduated in 2004.
Career Beginnings
After graduating from the Pittsburgh Technical Institute, Justine Ezarik worked in graphic design and video editing before establishing her own business. In May 2006, she started her YouTube channel, “iJustine”. Her interest in creating online video content led her to become a finalist in the “Yahoo! Talent Show,” a competition seeking the best online videos, in December 2006. In 2007, Ezarik began experimenting with live broadcasting, becoming an early adopter of “lifecasting,” transmitting her life live on the internet via a wireless webcam. She started broadcasting on Justin.tv (which later became Twitch) on May 29, 2007, and was one of the platform’s most popular early creators. During this period, she also had a role as a photojournalist in an episode of the television series The Kill Point and appeared as a co-host on the tech podcast MacBreak Weekly.
Breakthrough with Viral Video
Justine Ezarik gained significant international attention in August 2007 after creating a video about her first iPhone bill. The video, titled “300-page iPhone bill,” documented her surprise at receiving an extraordinarily detailed, 300-page statement from AT&T that itemized every data transfer from her first month of using the device. The video quickly went viral, accumulating millions of views and drawing mainstream media attention to the billing practices for the newly released iPhone. The widespread backlash prompted by the video led AT&T to change its billing procedures. This event established Ezarik as a relatable and influential voice in the tech community.
Major Work and Projects
As a content creator, Ezarik has focused on technology, video games, and vlogging. Her main YouTube channel, iJustine, has amassed over one billion views, and she specializes in technology reviews, particularly for Apple products, and unboxing videos. Her success has led to collaborations with major brands such as Microsoft, Google, Mattel, and Ford.
Beyond her YouTube work, Ezarik has undertaken various projects in acting and writing. She had a recurring voice role as Passion Fruit in the popular YouTube comedy series The Annoying Orange. Her acting credits also include guest appearances on television shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Criminal Minds, and The Vampire Diaries. In 2016, she served as an advisor to Arnold Schwarzenegger on the reality competition series The New Celebrity Apprentice.
In 2015, Ezarik authored I, Justine: An Analog Memoir, which became a New York Times Best Seller. In 2020, she launched a podcast with her sister Jenna called Same Brain, which focuses on technology, news, and video games. She has also interviewed prominent figures in the technology industry, including Apple CEO Tim Cook and Spotify CEO Daniel Ek.
Personal Life
Justine Ezarik frequently collaborates with her sisters, Jenna and Breanne Ezarik, who appear in her videos. After beginning her career in Pittsburgh, she later relocated to Los Angeles. In her memoir and interviews, she has discussed the challenges of life as a public online personality, including the blurring of her public and private life during her early lifecasting days. She had relationships with Justin Fishner-Wolfson and Brian Pokorny in 2008. More recently, she has been linked to video game journalist and host Geoff Keighley.
