His father, Mark Maye, played quarterback for the University of North Carolina (UNC) in the 1980s. His mother, Aimee, was a standout high school basketball player. Drake Lee Maye is the youngest of four brothers; Luke, Cole, and Beau, who all pursued collegiate athletics. Luke and Beau played basketball at UNC, and Cole played baseball at the University of Florida.

High School Career

Drake Lee Maye began his high school football career at William A. Hough High School before transferring to Myers Park High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. At Myers Park, he also excelled in basketball. In his junior year of football, he set school records with 3,512 passing yards and 50 touchdowns. That same year, The Charlotte Observer named him the Male Athlete of the Year. He was selected as an Under Armour All-American.

Collegiate Career at North Carolina

After initially committing to the University of Alabama, Drake Lee Maye decided to play college football at the University of North Carolina. As the quarterback for the North Carolina Tar Heels, he achieved a breakout season in 2022. That year, he was named the ACC Player of the Year and the ACC Offensive Player of the Year. He also won the Shaun Alexander Award. In the 2022 season, he led the NCAA in total offense with 5,019 yards, passing for a school-record 4,321 yards and 38 touchdowns, while also rushing for 698 yards and seven touchdowns. His performance helped lead the Tar Heels to the 2022 ACC Championship Game.

In the following season, he was named second-team All-ACC. Over his collegiate career at UNC, he passed for 8,018 yards and 63 touchdowns.
