Early life and education

Dan Martell was born on December 26, 1979, in Moncton, New Brunswick, Canada. His childhood and teenage years were marked by personal challenges, including struggles with ADHD, a difficult family environment, and substance use. These issues led to legal troubles, and at the age of 16, he was arrested after a police pursuit involving a stolen vehicle. He spent time in a youth detention facility.

A turning point came during his time in a rehabilitation program at Portage in New Brunswick, where he was introduced to computer programming. This experience sparked a new interest and provided a different path forward. Instead of pursuing a traditional university degree after high school, Martell focused on self-education and gaining practical experience in technology and business.

Career beginnings

Martell’s entrepreneurial journey began with early ventures that included a vacation rental website and a web hosting company he co-founded with his brother in 1999. After moving to Western Canada, he worked as a technology consultant.

In 2004, at the age of 24, he founded Spheric Technologies, a software consulting firm that specialized in enterprise portals and making them more social. The company provided services to large clients like Procter & Gamble, Dole Foods, and Johnson & Johnson. Spheric Technologies grew significantly and was acquired by Function1 in 2008.

Serial entrepreneurship

Following the sale of his first major company, Dan Martell co-founded Flowtown in 2009. Flowtown was a marketing tool designed to use social media data to help businesses connect with their customers. The company was acquired by Demandforce in 2011.

In 2012, he launched his next venture, Clarity.fm, a platform created to connect entrepreneurs with experts for advice over the phone. The idea was born from his own desire to make expert advice more accessible to entrepreneurs regardless of their location or network. Clarity.fm gained traction, attracting thousands of experts, and was acquired by Fundable in 2015. Alongside building companies, Martell became an active angel investor, investing in more than 60 companies, including notable startups like Intercom, Udemy, and Hootsuite. In 2012, his investment activities earned him the title of Canadian Angel of the Year.

SaaS coaching and authorship

After successfully building and exiting multiple tech companies, Martell shifted his focus to coaching other entrepreneurs. In 2016, he founded SaaS Academy, a coaching program specifically for founders of business-to-business (B2B) Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) companies. Through SaaS Academy, he provides coaching and proven playbooks to help founders scale their businesses. He also maintains a significant online presence, particularly through his YouTube channel which focuses on SaaS entrepreneurs.

Martell is also an author. His book, Buy Back Your Time, was published in 2023 and became a Wall Street Journal nonfiction bestseller. In 2024, he co-authored Software as a Science.
