Anthony Jay Robbins was born Anthony J. Mahavoric on February 29, 1960, in North Hollywood, California. He is the eldest of three children. His parents divorced when he was seven, and his mother remarried multiple times. At the age of 12, he was legally adopted by his stepfather, Jim Robbins, a former semi-professional baseball player.
Robbins has described his home life as “chaotic” and “abusive.” He attended Glendora High School, where he was elected student body president his senior year. During high school, he experienced a rapid growth spurt of ten inches in one year, which was later found to be the result of a pituitary tumor. At age 17, he left home and did not return. He began working as a janitor and did not pursue a college education.
Career Beginnings
At the age of 17, after leaving home, Robbins began his career by promoting seminars for motivational speaker Jim Rohn. He was inspired to seek out Rohn after a family friend suggested it. Robbins also trained with John Grinder, a co-founder of Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP), and learned to firewalk, which he later incorporated into his own seminars.
