Overview

Edrice Femi Adebayo is an American professional basketball player for the Miami Heat of the National Basketball Association (NBA) who is a multi-time All-Star, two-time Olympic gold medalist, and premier defensive specialist.

Latest News (Mar 12, 2026): Bam Adebayo made NBA history by scoring 83 points in a single game against the Washington Wizards, marking the second-highest individual scoring performance in league history. This historic feat surpassed Kobe Bryant's 81-point game and trails only Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point record.

Early life, birth, and family

Edrice Femi Adebayo was born on July 18, 1997, in Newark, New Jersey, to an African-American mother, Marilyn Blount, and a Nigerian father, John Adebayo. His mother gave him the nickname “Bam Bam” when at one year old, while watching The Flintstones, he flipped over a coffee table in a manner similar to the character Bamm-Bamm Rubble.

Adebayo was raised by his mother in a single-parent household. When he was seven, he and his mother moved to a small town in North Carolina. Growing up, the family faced financial challenges, at one point living in a trailer while his mother worked as a cashier. His father was largely absent from his life after the move and later passed away in Nigeria in 2020. For a period during his youth, Adebayo felt a disconnect from his Nigerian heritage due to his father’s absence, but he began to embrace it more around the age of 16.

High school and college career

Adebayo attended Northside High School in Pinetown, North Carolina, where as a junior he averaged 32.2 points and 21 rebounds per game. He then transferred to High Point Christian Academy in High Point, North Carolina, for his senior season. In his final year of high school, he averaged 18.9 points and 13.0 rebounds per game, leading his team to a state championship appearance. Following his senior season, Adebayo was named 2016 North Carolina Mr. Basketball and the North Carolina Gatorade Player of the Year. He was a highly-rated five-star recruit and participated in the McDonald’s All-American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic.

On November 17, 2015, Adebayo committed to play college basketball for the University of Kentucky. He played one season for the Kentucky Wildcats. In 38 games during the 2016–17 season, he averaged 13.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. His performance earned him selections to the Second-team All-SEC and the SEC All-Freshman team. Following Kentucky’s elimination in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament, Adebayo declared for the 2017 NBA draft.
