Early Life and Family
Chet Thomas Holmgren was born on May 1, 2002, in Minneapolis, Minnesota. His father, Dave Holmgren, played college basketball for the University of Minnesota from 1984 to 1988. Holmgren was raised with two sisters.
He began playing basketball under his father’s guidance. In sixth grade, Holmgren enrolled at Minnehaha Academy, a private school in Minneapolis. At that time, he stood 6 feet 2 inches tall and began playing alongside future NBA player Jalen Suggs, who was his teammate throughout high school. During his first year, he worked on improving his shooting range while recovering from a broken right wrist.
High School Career
Throughout his time at Minnehaha Academy, Chet Thomas Holmgren contributed to four state championships. As a freshman, he averaged 6.2 points and three rebounds per game as his team won the Class 2A state championship. In his sophomore season, his averages increased to 18.6 points and 11 rebounds per game, leading the team to another Class 2A state title. As a junior, he averaged 14.3 points per game.
In his senior year, Chet Thomas Holmgren averaged 21 points and 12.3 rebounds, leading Minnehaha to the Class 3A state title. Following this season, he received numerous accolades, including being named Mr. Basketball USA, Gatorade National Player of the Year, Naismith Prep Player of the Year, and Morgan Wootten National Player of the Year. He was also selected as a McDonald’s All-American and named Minnesota Mr. Basketball. By June 2020, he was ranked as the number one player in the 2021 recruiting class.
Collegiate Season at Gonzaga
On April 19, 2021, Chet Thomas Holmgren announced his commitment to play for Gonzaga University. In his collegiate debut, he recorded 14 points, 13 rebounds, 7 blocks, and 6 assists. For the season, he averaged 14.1 points, 9.9 rebounds, and 3.7 blocks per game.

After sustaining a Lisfranc injury to his foot during an offseason pro-am game, the Thunder announced he would miss the entire 2022–2023 season. His NBA debut occurred on October 25, 2023. Following his inaugural season of play, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.
National Team Representation
Chet Thomas Holmgren has represented the United States in international competition. He was a member of the U.S. team at the 2021 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in Latvia.
