Jayson Christopher Tatum was born on March 3, 1998, in St. Louis, Missouri. His parents are Justin Tatum and Brandy Cole. His father played basketball at Saint Louis University and later became a basketball coach. His mother, who was 19 when he was born, raised him as a single mother while pursuing her own education, eventually earning a law degree and an MBA. Former NBA player Larry Hughes is his godfather.
Tatum attended Chaminade College Preparatory School in Creve Coeur, Missouri. During his high school career, he received numerous accolades. As a freshman, he averaged 13.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. By his senior year in 2015–16, he was averaging 29.6 points and 9.1 rebounds, leading Chaminade to a state championship.
