Early Life and Education
Kayleigh Michelle McEnany was born on April 18, 1988, in Tampa, Florida. Her father owned a commercial roofing company. She attended Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, earning a degree in international politics. During her undergraduate studies, she interned for former President George W. Bush. McEnany also studied politics and international relations at Oxford University’s St Edmund Hall. She later graduated from Harvard Law School with a Juris Doctor.
Media and Political Beginnings
McEnany began her media career as a producer for the Mike Huckabee Show on Fox News. She later became a political commentator on CNN. During the 2016 Republican presidential primaries, she was initially critical of Donald Trump, referring to some of his remarks about Mexican immigrants as “racist”. Over time, she became a staunch supporter of his candidacy.
In August 2017, McEnany left her role at CNN and began hosting a video streaming program on Trump’s Facebook page. Shortly after, she was appointed the national spokesperson for the Republican National Committee (RNC). In 2018, she published the book The New American Revolution: The Making of a Populist Movement. She transitioned to become the national press secretary for President Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign in February 2019.
White House Press Secretary
On April 7, 2020, Kayleigh Michelle McEnany became the White House Press Secretary for the Trump administration, a role she held until January 20, 2021. She succeeded Stephanie Grisham. Her tenure was marked by a resumption of regular press briefings, which had become infrequent under her predecessor. McEnany was a staunch defender of the administration’s policies and was also noted for her frequent criticisms of the media.
Post-White House Career
