Early Life and Formative Years
Matisse Vincent Thybulle was born on March 4, 1997, in Scottsdale, Arizona, to Greg Thybulle and Dr. Elizabeth Thybulle. His father is a Haitian-born engineer, and his mother was a naturopathic doctor. The family moved to Sydney, Australia, in 1998, where they resided for about seven years. During his time in Australia, Thybulle was more involved in swimming than basketball. In 2005, the family returned to the United States, settling in Sammamish, Washington.
Thybulle attended Skyline High School for two years before transferring to Eastside Catholic School. At Eastside Catholic, he developed into a highly-rated basketball recruit. In 2015, during his senior year, his mother, Elizabeth, passed away from leukemia. His high school jersey number was later retired by Eastside Catholic in 2024.
Collegiate Defensive Standout
Thybulle played college basketball for the University of Washington Huskies from 2015 to 2019. During his four-year collegiate career, he established himself as one of the nation’s top defensive players.
In his senior year, he was named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year and received the Lefty Driesell Award as the top defensive player in college basketball. He was also the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, becoming only the second player in conference history to win the award twice. That season, he led all of NCAA Division I with 126 steals, a new Pac-12 single-season record previously held by Jason Kidd. He also recorded 83 blocks, becoming the only player in the last two decades with at least 100 steals and 80 blocks in a single season. Thybulle finished his college career as the Pac-12’s all-time leader in steals with 331 and tied the University of Washington’s career blocks record.
Professional Basketball Career
Matisse Vincent Thybulle was selected with the 20th overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft by the Boston Celtics, with his draft rights being traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. He quickly became known for his defensive skills at the professional level. In both 2021 and 2022, he was named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team.
After playing for the 76ers from 2019 to 2023, Thybulle was traded to the Portland Trail Blazers. He holds dual American and Australian citizenship and represents Australia in international competition. Thybulle was a member of the Australian national team at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where he helped the team win a bronze medal, the country’s first-ever Olympic medal in men’s basketball.
