Anthony Edwards was born in Atlanta, Georgia. He was raised by his mother and grandmother. Tragically, both his mother and grandmother died of cancer over an eight-month period when he was in the eighth grade. Following their deaths, he was raised by his older sister and brother. However, he ultimately chose to focus on basketball.
For high school, Edwards attended Therrell High School before transferring to Holy Spirit Preparatory School in Atlanta. At Holy Spirit Prep, he became a consensus five-star recruit and was considered one of the top players in the 2019 class. His performance in high school earned him McDonald’s All-American and USA Today All-USA first team honors.
College Career at Georgia
Despite receiving offers from some of the nation’s top college basketball programs, Edwards chose to attend the University of Georgia, a decision that allowed him to remain close to his family. In his lone season with the Georgia Bulldogs (2019-2020), he made a significant impact, leading all Division I freshmen in scoring with an average of 19.1 points per game. His performance earned him the SEC Freshman of the Year award. At the conclusion of his freshman season, Edwards declared for the NBA draft.
NBA Career Beginnings
Anthony Edwards was selected by the Minnesota Timberwolves with the first overall pick in the 2020 NBA draft.
