As a senior at Nathan Hale, he had a standout season, averaging 36.2 points and 13.6 rebounds per game, leading the team to a perfect 29-0 record and the Washington Class 3A State Championship. His performance earned him numerous accolades, including being named the Naismith and Gatorade National Player of the Year. He was also named MVP of the McDonald’s All-American Game in 2017.

Porter Jr. was a five-star recruit and one of the top prospects in the 2017 class. He initially committed to the University of Washington but later decommitted after a coaching change and chose to play for the University of Missouri, where his father was an assistant coach and his younger brother Jontay also played.

His college career at Missouri was brief. He sustained a lower back injury in the season opener which required surgery. He returned to play in the quarterfinals of the SEC Tournament and the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Professional Career

Michael Lamar Porter Jr. was selected as the 14th overall pick by the Denver Nuggets in the 2018 NBA draft. Due to a second back surgery, he missed the entirety of his first season. He made his NBA debut on October 31, 2019, scoring fifteen points against the New Orleans Pelicans.
