His father is a decorated Marine who served in the Vietnam War, and his mother worked as a waitress. His parents divorced when he was 13 years old. After graduating from high school, Lynch attended the John Jay College of Criminal Justice at the City University of New York for a single semester before dropping out.

After leaving college, Dennis Michael Lynch ventured into entrepreneurship. In 1993, he started an auction company called Four Star Enterprises from his mother’s home. He later launched a computer recycling company named Lynx Technologies. This venture attracted significant investment, including $13 million from venture capitalists and former Apple and Pepsi CEO John Sculley in August 1999.
